In a significant development, a group of 600 lawyers, including prominent figures like senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, has penned a letter to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, highlighting concerns about the activities of a “specific interest group” that they claim is tarnishing the reputation of the Judiciary.

The letter, which was addressed to the CJI, raises alarming allegations against this “interest group,” accusing them of employing pressure tactics to influence judicial outcomes, especially in cases involving political figures and corruption allegations. The lawyers expressed deep concern over the creation of a false narrative about judges and the court, along with accusations of “bench fixing,” attacks on judges’ honor, and unjust comparisons of domestic courts to lawless regimes.

According to the lawyers, these “interest groups” adopt a “My way or the highway” approach, selectively criticizing or praising court decisions based on their political agenda. They highlighted the strategic timing of these tactics, often coinciding with crucial moments such as elections, to manipulate public opinion and undermine the judiciary’s credibility.

The letter emphasized the critical need for protective measures to safeguard the integrity of the judiciary. The lawyers called for a united stand in support of the judiciary, urging decisive leadership to counter these challenges effectively. They asserted that efforts to manipulate courts for personal or political gains cannot be tolerated, emphasizing the importance of speaking out against such underhanded attacks to ensure the judiciary remains a robust pillar of democracy.

In conclusion, the letter underscored the imperative of maintaining judicial independence and upholding the rule of law, urging the Supreme Court to take proactive measures to address these threats and preserve the judiciary’s integrity amidst growing external pressures.
